In today’s world, the demand for advanced materials with tunable properties and reliable, long-lasting performance has become mission critical for a variety of industries. Common materials such as ceramics, plastics and metals can be treated by various surface methods such as grit blasting, solvent cleaning, or wet chemical processing to modify their properties and to promote new functionalities. Plasma processing is an attractive alternative as a sustainable, dry method that can be used for inline manufacturing.

In this PlasmaTalk, Dr. Dhia Ben Salem, Team Leader Research of the Plasmatreat R&D group in Germany, and Dr. Daphne Pappas, R&D Manager of Plasmatreat USA, will present innovative applications of Plasmatreat’s Openair-Plasma® and PlasmaPlus® technologies used for the cleaning, functionalization of surfaces and thin film deposition on engineering materials. 

Specifically, an overview of innovative Openair-Plasma® processes and PlasmaPlus® coatings including the deposition of adhesion promoting, anti-corrosion, anti-ice or friction reduction coatings will be presented.

  • Who is presenting in Asia & Europe:

    Dhia Ben Salem, PhD

    Dhia Ben Salem, is a PhD in Plasma chemistry (Sorbonne University + Chemical engineering school in Paris, France). With more than five years of experience as Team Leader Research at Plasmatreat, he has given great contribution to plasma thin film deposition and characterization of functional coatings. His most recent research work is focused on adhesion promotion, anti-corrosion and superhydrophilic coatings for industrial applications.
  • Who is presenting in America:

    Dr. Daphne Pappas

    Dr. Daphne Pappas has 20+ years’ experience in plasma technology and surface engineering. Since October 2018, she leads the R&D and Applications team at Silicon Valley-based Plasmatreat USA. Prior to joining Plasmatreat, Daphne has worked in the semiconductor industry with start-ups and leading high- tech organizations such as Lam Research Corporation. Aside from her experience in industry, Daphne conducted plasma research at a United States National Laboratory for 7 years and also served as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Case Western Reserve University.  Daphne holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Materials Science. She is the author of more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and technical reports, and is listed as co-inventor on 3 US patents. Her research interests involve; plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of thin films using atmospheric and low-pressure plasmas, surface characterization techniques and studies of plasma-surface interactions.
