Chemical solvents and complex cleaning methods have been widely used for the surface modification of medical device materials. Plasma technology offers an alternative surface modification approach that is both sustainable and cost effective. This method can be customized for a variety of materials such as polymers, metals and ceramics through the application of vacuum-based or atmospheric-pressure plasmas.

In the PlasmaTalk by Dr. Daphne Pappas, we demonstrate how plasma can enhance the performance of materials used in biomedical applications. The presentation will provide an overview of the fundamentals of plasma-material interactions, followed by real world examples. Common biomedical applications like catheters, microfluidic devices, cell culture and implantable materials, syringes and IV sets will be discussed.

Dr. Pappas has extensive experience in understanding surfaces and their properties, as well as the advantages of the various plasma technologies. The focus of this PlasmaTalk will pertain to Plasmatreat’s approach to finding solutions that will help you achieve the desired material performance for your application.

    Dr. Daphne Pappas

    Dr. Daphne Pappas has 20+ years’ experience in plasma technology and surface engineering. Since October 2018, she leads the R&D and Applications team at Silicon Valley-based Plasmatreat USA. Prior to joining Plasmatreat, Daphne has worked in the semiconductor industry with start-ups and leading high- tech organizations such as Lam Research Corporation. Aside from her experience in industry, Daphne conducted plasma research at a United States National Laboratory for 7 years and also served as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Case Western Reserve University.

    Daphne holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Materials Science. She is the author of more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and technical reports, and is listed as co-inventor on 3 US patents. Her research interests involve; plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of thin films using atmospheric and low-pressure plasmas, surface characterization techniques and studies of plasma-surface interactions.
